En general, las apelaciones contemporáneas a los derechos humanos tienden a centrarse en las violaciones de la dignidad y la libertad humanas, experimentadas principalmente por grupos minoritarios, con un enfoque específico en los refugiados y solicitantes de asilo. Organizaciones como Amnistía Internacional y Human Rights Watch abogan regularmente en nombre de estos grupos e investigan violaciones de la legislación de derechos humanos en todo el mundo.

Los derechos de propiedad rara vez, si es que alguna vez, se han visto amenazados por las organizaciones y la legislación de derechos humanos durante las décadas neoliberales.
